NFL Week 3 Predictions

This week seems somewhat easy to predict which actually gives me less confidence in what the actual outcomes will be. It's week 3 and you start to think you have a grip on who teams are shaping up to be this season. Still, there is so much turmoil in terms of major players being lost to injury or demanding trades, it's hard to even know who will be on the field from week to week. I went 11-5 last week. This week my picks are laregly influenced by the teams missing their starting QBs and home field advantage. Right now, if you have the quarterback you started the season with you are in a good positive in the NFL to win this week! Let's get to the picks!!

Seahawks Week 2 Review

I think we can all exhale now. The uncertainty after how we looked week 1, and some of the doubts around the offensive line, our play calling, and our ability to cover on defense have somewhat evened out. Make no mistake, winning on the road, in Pittsburgh, against a team that was embarrassed last week, was HUGE for this team. This is the first time we have gone 2-0 to start a season since 2013, which as I recall was a pretty special year. I'm not saying we are going to the Superbowl, but often it's these few games where you didn't really expect to win that can tilt the home field advantage come playoff time, and that does impact our chances of going deep into the playoffs. We have to make the playoffs first, but getting wins like we did yesterday are the stepping stones we will use to get there. Let's breakdown this great road win.

OFFENSE: The Really Good
Russell Wilson. That's it, that's the post. Kidding, but he was magnificent yet again, and in terms of his decisiveness, accuracy, and poise, he was as good as I had ever seen him. Russell threw for 300 yards, 3TD, and most notably got the ball out of his hand in just 1.88 seconds. The fastest time in the NFL since 2016. Wide receivers, Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf flashed as well, with 10 receptions for Tyler and 1st NFL touchdown for Metcalf. Will Dissley had himself a game, and outside of Russell was perhaps the most important offensive player on the field yesterday. 5 catches for 50 yards, 2 touchdowns, and the 3 other catches went for 1st down conversions. He came up big, and being just 9 months removed from patellar tendon surgery, he looks steady, strong, and like a veteran out there, even with missing most of his rookie season last year.

OFFENSE:The Bad, and Better
The offensive line started off looking like they picked up right where they left off last week. Horrible pass protection, not picking up blitzes, and Russell Wilson sacks, hurries, and hits. Credit OC Brian Schottenheimer for making great in-game adjustments this week. When he recognized that the O-line was struggling, yet again, he adjusted the game plan and started calling quick passes, getting the ball out of Russ's hands, taking advantage of the aggressive defense the Steelers like to play and moving the ball in the second half. Germain Ifedi and DJ Fluker had awful games. Fluker is a great run blocker, but pass blocking isn't his strong suit. Ifedi continues to get costly penalties, false starts and holds that luckily we were able to overcome , for the most part, yesterday. Chris Carson has now fumbled 3 times in 2 games, compared to only 4 lost fumbles all of last season. The Steelers were able to get 14 point off of those 2 fumbles, and without them this game would have been a blow out. It felt like the Seahawks were in control most of the game, and even the sacks and turnovers didn't take away that feeling that once we stopped shooting ourselves in the foot we were going to win this game.

DEFENSE: The Good
Tedric Thompson was out of yesterday's game with a hamstring injury, and Lano Hill performed well in his place. Hill was scored as the 2nd best defensive player for the Seahawks by Pro Football Focus. We didn't give up a catch to a wide receiver for a long stretch of time to start the game, and that was when Ben Roethlisberger was still in the game. Our defense was on it yesterday, if it wasn't for the short fields caused by turnovers on offense, I'm not sure we would have given up a touchdown yesterday. Mychal Kendricks was flying around the field, laying dudes out. Nothing gets past Bobby Wagner, as usual. A number of key players for the Steelers left the game with injury, including Big Ben and James Conner. I don't use that as an excuse as to why the defense was successful. They created that environment by flying around, hitting hard, and being in position to make sound tackles. The defensive line had more passes deflected in this game, and that is not something we saw a lot of in previous seasons. I credit the coaching for making that a part of our arsenal on defense and the big guys at the line for being able to create pressure to force the throws while still being aware and able enough to disengage off the block and get their hands up in time to deflect those passes.

DEFENSE: The Not So Good
I started off praising the play of Lano Hill, but he got caught out of position in a very familiar way on Sunday. He was a victim of another flea FUCKING flicker from Mason Rudolph of all people yesterday. I feel like I spoke Rudolph into existence by making him my " Fine Across Enemy Lines" player for last week, and saying he won't see the field. Still I can't hate on Thompson as much as I did without also pointing out Hill got got on that one too. Still, when opposing teams are going to flea flickers to score points it is a good sign that our defense is stifling their play calling. I would like to see more pressure on the quarterback, of course Ansah and Collier, who had 16 snaps Sunday, will eventually get into the mix, and Jarran Reed returns week 6, so I fully expect our pass rush to improve as guys start coming back. Overall, I don't have much to complain about when it comes to the Seahawks defense against the Steelers yesterday.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Pete Carroll made some great calls yesterday, in game changing moments. Challenging the no-call for PI against Tyler Locket which was actually over-turned and called pass interference was HUGE. I had yet to see one of those challenges work in a game I was watching, and with the little contact that occurred I though for certain we weren't going to win that one. Then deciding to go for it on 4th and 1, with the option to go for a field goal to go up 5 and require the Steelers to go the entire field and score a TD to win. I though Pete made a gutsy call, but the right call. I also love that to get that 1 yard we were able to go back to Carson, run POWER behind Mike Iupati ( who is still working his way back from injury) and seal the win in that way. Malik Turner stood out with 3 catches for 54 yards and a long of 30 yards. Russelll was getting the ball to every offensive weapon he had, and he even used his legs a bit on that final drive. Whenever Russ runs it's like Christmas morning for me. The shitty grass at Hines Field almost took him out on a slide, but it's like every door is flung wide open when Russell runs. I feel like our offense is unstoppable and that we are going to win no matter what. Jadevaon Clowney was asked about Russell after the game and said that he was 50% of the reason he wanted to come here. That Russell never gives up, even down 100-0, and that is the kind of guy he will ride for. That's just refreshing to hear from a defensive players, where in years past there was rumors of jealousy and hate being thrown at QB1 from guys on defense. Russell got his 200th passing touchdown in just 114 games, that is 5th all time fastest behind guys like Merino, Manning, Rogers, and Farve. It's about time the man gets the credit he is due. We have an infatuation with what guys like Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes are doing the last couple years, but Russell has performed at the highest level for EIGHT years now, and deserves to be in the discussion for best QB in the league. Last, but certainly not least, it was Pete Carroll's 68th birthday yesterday, and the team went nuts in the locker room, dumping water bottles on him, and giving him the game ball. Happy Birthday Coach.

PLAYER OF THE GAME:  Russell Wilson, 29-35, 300 yards, 3TDs, 0 INTs, completion percentage of 83%. One hell of a pregame huddle speech and post game locker room speech was on point too.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Chris Carson converting on 4th & 1 on a power run to seal the game.

WORST PLAY OF THE GAME: Also goes to Carson on his 1st fumble of the game, which game the Steelers their first touch down.

WEIRD PLAY I STRANGELY LOVED: KJ Wright tackling Ju Ju Smith-Schuster by holding onto his hand for dear life. (If my man don't hold my hand like that then I don't want him LOL)

FOR THE MRS.: Fine Across Enemy Lines

Here is a little something for the ladies who love football! Years back I did a special on the the hottest player on all 32 teams in the NFL. This year I am going to feature a FOR THE MRS. column that puts a spotlight on the SEXIEST player on the team the Seahawks play each week  I call it " Fine Across Enemy Lines"

This week the Seahawks play the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the sexiest man on the team isn't even likely to get on the field. ( Unless we are lucky and Reothlisburger get's another shoulder/ peck injury that is "like string cheese"..but I don't wish injuries even on the worst of people). Back to the hottness:

Mason Rudolph

NFL Week 2 Predictions

Last week I ended up going 12-4 on my picks, but this week was a lot harder to try to predict. When making picks I try to throw out what happened the previous week and make predictions as if the last week never happened. This helps me to not overreact if a team has a particularly great game, or a really bad one. That's why I'm not taking Tennessee, even though they dominated the Browns on the road in week 1, and it's why I am taking Chicago, after their poor showing last Thursday. Here are my predictions for week 2.

Seahawks Week 1 Review

I can't be the only one still trying to figure out how they feel about yesterday's game against the Bengals. We won, that is the ultimate takeaway, in a league where it is so hard to win on any given Sunday, and where teams go from worst to first in at least one division without fail. The first game of the year is always tough to sort out, because we don't know what to expect from ourselves or the opponents. You let last year tell it, and the Bengals have the worst defense in the league. You let the preseason tell it, and we have the best offensive line in the league. You really don't have a clue how teams are going to perform until about week 4. So let's look at week one from all sides of the ball, but let's look at it in a vacuum, because I don't think we can draw many conclusions about the Seahawks or this season based on our win yesterday.

OFFENSE: The Good
I always like to start with the positive. So, let's get it started with DK "Motherfucking" Metcalf. He shows up to the game in a Steve Largent throwback (so he already won our hearts) then he goes out and plays perhaps the biggest role in the offense on Sunday, without scoring a TD. He ended the game with 4 catches for 89 yards, most ever in a rookie WR debut for the Seahawks  since, get this, Largent had 86 yards in the very first game of franchise existence in 1976.  While the catches were great, in traffic, deep, quick slants, I was most impressed by the other ways he contributed. Drawing the pass interference in the end zone, let me know that teams are already afraid of his size and recognize his potential as a guy you can throw it up to in the back of the end zone. Even more note worthy, was when he caught the deep pass, during the 2 minute drill in the first half, he didn't celebrate, flex, or signal a first down. Instead, he had the situational awareness to quickly run the ball over to the ref and get back on the line. We still had over minute on the clock, and first and goal, but that maturity and mental focus is not often found in rookies, let alone a potential future star wide receiver. Before I get off the DK train, he did something after the game that I feel should be applauded. In a league and time where Antonio Brown can literally quit on 2 teams in 2 consecutive game weeks (Steelers, week 16 & Raiders, week 1) , make everything about himself, and somehow get rewarded by being signed to the Super Bowl favorite Patriots. DK Metcalf tweeted out a highlight from yesterdays game, in which he had many of himself to choose from, and the player he chose to draw attention to was Tyler Lockett. Captioning Tyler's only catch of the game, a beautifully thrown deep ball from Wilson for a Touchdown, with " Big Bro 💗".  I loved everything from pregame to postgame from our standout rookie wide receiver yesterday.

OFFENSE: The Not So Good
I've thought long and hard about how much I should go in on the offense, and I decided to not burn the place down after one game. Still, I was most disappointed with the game plan, lack of offensive adjustments, and offensive line play yesterday. Let's start with the game plan. The plan was to run it, and run it, and run it. The usually works for us, and we won yesterday so in essence it worked again. We only had 3 active WRs on game day, a total of 5 catches between those 3 players, and our RB lead the team in receptions. When we continually are starting drives with negative plays, I feel we need to look at how better to set up the run. I am not saying we should abandon the run. I love Chris Carson, he runs harder than anybody in the league in my opinion and the fact he had the most broken tackles of any RB last season is a testament to that. However, if they know it's coming, we aren't utilizing our playbook or personnel properly. For example, we ran the ball on read-option several times yesterday, and Russell didn't keep the ball until the 4th quarter. The read option only works if  the opposing defense respects the idea that the quarterback keeping the ball IS ACTUALLY AN OPTION. and with Russell IT IS! We have, again, in my opinion, the best QB in the league on read-option. I love to see Russ keep it on the first play of the game. Not only do we almost always get positive yards when Russ keeps it, but he knows how to protect himself, and it makes the guys setting the edge hesitate just a second longer on every run play. That can be the difference between 0 or negative yards and the 3-4 yards you hope to get on an average run play. The pressure on Russell was brutal. It seemed like we started each drive with a sack, 2nd & 16, then still ran the ball again for a loss, 3rd & 20. If we are going to be as dedicated to the run as we were yesterday then we have to set it up better. Play- action needs to get Russell outside the pocket on some roll outs to give receivers more time to get down field. If the O-line can't provide a pocket for Russell to throw from, then we need to be able to get Russ in space and allow him time to go deep. We did that on a couple of plays and had great success. That threat to throw deep, and the option of Russell's legs are what is going to help our run-first offense be successful.

DEFENSE: The Good
The defense won the game yesterday. We gave up a lot of plays we shouldn't have, but I'll get to that next, for now let's focus on what went right on defense for the Seahawks. Clowney had his Seahawks debut, and he was impactful on the plays that he was in on. QB pressures, caused sacks, knocked down a ball at the line of scrimmage, and was held on probably like 10 other plays. For only having a week to practice in an entirely new system, and not having really any preseason to get in game shape, I was pleased with how Clowney showed up against the Bengals. I won't go any further without acknowledging Bobby Wagner, the man doesn't miss a tackle. I saw players opt to go down when they saw that he was the one going to be tackling them. Receivers sliding down like quarterbacks, when he got close. Bobby is, and has been the best middle line backer in the game, and he was solid once again. Other stand outs were Quentin Jefferson with 2 sacks,  2 TFL, and 2 pass deflections at the line. He had his best game as a Seahawk, and it made me feel a little bit better about missing Ansah, Collier, and Reed on the D-line. Al Woods had my favorite defensive play of all time, which is a lineman interception. It's just the fat boy joy, the attempt at running it back, how happy the rest is the team is for him. It's better than a corner back pick-six as far as I am concerned. Woods had a few good plays, and he is a veteran who started 24 games the last 2 years with the Indianapolis Colts, and he is going to provide great depth on the defensive line once we get those 3 starters back.

DEFENSE: The Straight Up Bad
There is no way to shake it, no matter what way I turn my heard to look at the play of our secondary yesterday, I can't get past the way Tedric Thompson played the deep ball on that pass to Ross II for the touch down. Like everyone else, all I could think was how different that play would have gone is Earl Thomas was at Safety. On respect alone, that ball doesn't get thrown. Still it's not fair to compare Thompson to Thomas. Earl was the best FS in the league, and Tedric is only 24 years old. At the very least, he has room for growth, and he is in the right system with the right coaching to become the player we need him to be. With that being said, I wouldn't be mad if news comes out that we resigned Deshawn Shead. I am uncomfortable with our secondary play, to say the least. Pete Carroll said they had to give up some yards, and do a little " rope-a-dope" in order to tighten up in the redzone, which did show up in the Bengals going 0 for 3 within 20 yards. Over 400 yards passing for Andy Dalton, and them scoring on a GOD DAMN FLEA FLICKER, is just stuck in my craw this morning. Still, it's only week 1, and with all the room we have for improvement, we still walked away with the W and a lot to be encouraged about. Tre Flowers can play corner, but he has to earn the right to use that outside arm when deflecting a pass, the way Sherman can and get away with it. He isn't proven and he has to clean that up until he makes a name for himself as someone who knows how to defend the pass. The refs will continue to call that pass interference, every damn time, so adjustments in technique need to be made, because he is in position to make plays, and we are going to need him to.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
I love the heart and hustle by Cody Barton, but I was as mad as Pete on that roughing the kicker penalty that extended Cincinnati's drive. We had a take away on special teams that made up for it later. The turn over on the first play of the second half could have really been a game changer, and taken all of the momentum if the defense didn't step up and get the ball right back with a takeaway of our own. We don't know what kind of team the Bengals are going to be this year, but they stood toe to toe with us at Century Link, and  we are going to have to do the same next week when we go to Hines Field to take on the Steelers who were embarrassed by the Patriots in prime time. As always, GO 'HAWKS!!

It's Been a While; How About We Start With Week 1 Predictions?

Please, hold your applause. Yes, I am bringing back the blog. It has been, well...5 years since I last updated this blog. I went back and read some of my posts, and it's hilarious to read about my take on Russell Wilson as a rookie, and how great I thought he was from the start (glad that aged well). Seahawk's football has been quit the ride, from winning the Super Bowl to losing the Super Bowl (that shit fucked me up) to the countless players who have come and gone. I've been here, in the shadows, continuously supporting my team through it all.

The scrutiny that came with winning the Super Bowl and the expectations, on top of everyone having opinions, and so much hate from other fan bases. I had to step away from the blog. I actually stepped away from football, quite a bit. I stopped listening to sports talk radio and the pundits on ESPN and NFL Network. I couldn't take the rumors of locker room turmoil and the drama that came after winning it all in 2013 and I really couldn't escape the constant replaying of the pass on the 1 yard line. That will haunt me for the rest of my life. All of the sudden, everyone was not only a Seahawk fan, but they were loud, opinionated, and not built for adversity.

They couldn't take it when we missed the playoffs, many jumped ship, every game day was nothing but "new" fans judging every play, every player, every coaching decision. Uneducated, unfounded, untested, and unwanted opinions on MY TEAM. I stopped posting about the Seahawks, stopped listening to so called experts, who didn't even know how to pronounce Cliff Avril's name correctly, but thought they could tell me about my team, but I never stopped rooting. I was there, every Sunday, Monday, and Thursday, for every snap, for the last 5 years. I've been right here, believing in this team, having fun watching them play, and loving every minute of every game. Slowly, I've found my way back to the Seahawks community, to the Twelves, I feel like many of the fair weather fans have quieted down, and found their place. We are back in the underdog role where we are comfortable, and I am really excited about this season.

I intend to bring back my blog, I'll post weekly NFL predictions, a weekly preview and review of the Seahawk's games, and other fun stuff along the way. Thanks for coming on this ride with me... a woman who loves football. #GOHAWKS
