My Picks for this Weekends Divisional Playoffs

Cardinals @ Saints

In the first of this weekends Divisional playoff games the Arizona Cardinals take on the New Orleans Saints. This for me is the hardest game to predict. Drew Breeze and Kurt Warner are among the best currently playing the QB position. This game will have scoring and lots of it. In my mind the better all around team has to be the Saints, they have a better defense and when healthy a better offense as well. What influencing my pick this week is momentum. The Saints lost their last 3 games of the year, and had a week off last week.Momentum is not on their side. If they want to win, they need to score early and create turn overs at key times and switch the momentum that going into the game is in the Cardinals favor. The Cardinals, who won last week in overtime against the Green Bay Packers, should be feeling good about themselves offensively having scored 51 points in the highest scoring playoff game in NFL history, but skilled defensive players like Darnell Dockett and Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie need to step up their play against the Saints high flying offense.

Ravens @ Colts

Nobody expected the Ravens the beat the Patriots last week, a quick start and interceptions for the Ravens got them ahead 24-0 early. Here is the thing; if the Ravens repeat last weeks performance, and jump off to a lead, it won't be long before the Colts strike back. In my first post of the season I stated to Colts had "the smoothest operating offense in the NFL" and I stand by that. Peyton Manning simply has too many options, and my favorite is Pierre Garcon, who emerged this year and a viable threat and a solid option for Manning along with Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clarke. At just 23 years old, in just his second year in the NFL, Garcon has 47 reception this season and is poised to have a big game against the Ravens. That coupled with the fact the Colts have the best pass rusher in the game in Dwight Freeney , and that Joey Flacco is nursing sore ribs coming into the game, Colts should do better in keeping the Ravens out of the redzone, that the Patriots did last week. The Ravens ALWAYS play the Colts tough and I take that into consideration in my prediction.

MORA OUT CARROLL IN; AS SEAHAWKS HEAD COACH

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to announce USC coach, Pete Carroll as the next President and head coach of the Seattle Seahawks later this afternoon. This on the heels of the somewhat shocking firing of Jim Mora Jr. over the weekend.

The Seahawks who went 5-11 in Mora's first year as head coach, all but fell apart that last part of the season, with abysmal losses to the Texans, Buccaneers, and Packers. Heads were destined to roll, but on the chopping block seemed to be the offensive and defensive coordinators, rather than Mora himself. Seattle sports fans, media, and even Mora himself were blindsided by the firing. No one expected the Seahawks to be in the Superbowl and even the playoffs for 2009 seemed a lofty task, going into the season. This after all, is a franchise in transition, with an entirely new coaching staff. To terminate Mora after only one season seems hasty to say the least.

Even more surprising is the man Paul Allen has chosen to replace him. Pete Carroll, who has been highly successful as the head coach of the USC Trojans for the past 9 years. Who had a record of 97-19 during his tenure, 10 losses of which came during his first and last years. USC has finished first in the Pac-10 7 of the 9 years with Carroll at the helm, won 2 national championships and utterly dominated its division. While there is no arguing his success and ability in coaching at the collegiate level, his previous stint in the NFL was not as prosperous.

With a head coaching record of 33-31 in his four years as a head coach in the NFL, 1 with the NY JETS and 3 with the NE PATRIOTS, Carroll only won one playoff game, and failed to impress after taking over a Super Bowl team in the PATS in 1997. His body of work and record in the NFL is similar to that of Jim Mora Jr., 31-33 in the NFL. Which leaves us to question why Seattle was so quick to act in the recent firings and hirings.

I was torn in the beginning. I thought Mora deserved another year, I don't think an accurate assessment can be made in one season as to the long term success of a coach, but one thing is very clear, the Seahawks are a dysfunctional team and it ALL begins at the top, in the front office. Mora lost his players in training camp and I am certain of that. In his attempts to assert himself as a no - nonsense coach and shake that "player's coach' image he carried with him from his time in ATL, he pushed the players too hard in training camp. When the season got started he began calling out players to the media, starting with the kicker Olindo Mare and then the entire Offensive Line, Seahawk Center Chris Spencer, on their toughness.

In any sport, such public scrutiny is looked down on by the people involved, a head coach should NEVER go on national television and point fingers at his players. You do that after the game in the locker room, or the next week in the film room. The dysfunction only grew. Which lead to a dreadful season and to the questioning of whether or not the Seahawks needed to 'clean house'. The question became " Do our players have enough TALENT to compete in the NFL?" it is for this reason I believe Pete Carroll was the best hire as the next President and Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

What Carroll brings is an unrivaled ability to find, assess, and recruit players with pure football TALENT. It is my opinion that the Seahawks have some extremely talented players, that are not performing to their ability. I feel Carroll is going to be able to accurately assess the current state the team is in, starting with their talent level. There is no denying the talent coming out of USC in the last 9 years. There are currently 38 professional football players in the NFL that came out of USC. From 2001-2009 , there have been 51 USC players in the NFL draft, including 14 first round draft choices. Among those 51 players are what could easily be the offensive and defensive rookies of the year in Jets QB, Mark Sanchez, and Bengals LB, Rey Maualuga. Other high profile names, now veterans in the NFL, Bengals QB, Carson Palmer, and Steelers DB, Troy Palamalu.

For that reason alone I am optimistic about the hiring of Pete Carroll. When it comes to recognizing pure athletic ability, and talent on both the collegiate and professional level, there is no one better. The next step for the Seahawks is going to be finding a new General Manager, that can compliment Carroll's best abilities. Let Mora be a lesson for Carroll, who also carries a reputation of being a 'players coach.'

What you do in the beginning weeks and months, to assert yourself as the head coach and how you relate to your players through the media, and on the sidelines, will make all the difference in turning around the dysfunctions of the Seattle Seahawks. If Carroll can fairly assess the talent level, and the new GM can bring in the missing pieces and remove the broken ones, the Seahawks now have the best chance returning to the grace they have fallen so far from the last few years.

Seahawks Take 3-5 Record into Second Half of Season

Fair weather- fans. Its seasons like these and losses like week 6 to the Arizona Cardinals that show the true Seahawk fans from the fakes. Turnover- plagued first quarters, red zone pass interference penalties, poor coaching, poor playing, and season ending injuries; these are the bi lines that have defined the Seahawks first half of the 2009 Season. Time to decide, what kind of fan are you?

There are those of us who are so emotionally invested, our health cannot afford us to not change the channel. Then there are those who simply jump off and on the ban wagon with every season, every game, every play. Going into Arizona this week with a 3-5 record facing the division leading Cardinals 5-3, I am the true 12th man. I look at this season and I'm not thinking about the draft or who needs to be fired, I believe in our players and support our efforts every down. I'm looking for us to win this game and be only 1 game back from the division lead, with a weak remaining schedule! ( except for Minnesota next week)

For those of you who are already chanting, "Fire Mora", or booing Matt Hasselbeck for throwing an interception on the first play for the Hawks vs. the Lions last week, I have but one thing to say "GO PUT ON YOUR BLUE AND WHITE AND ROOT FOR THE COLTS!" because us true fans don't need you, and your constant doubting and flip flopping.

That said I know I haven't updated my blog in a while, and I apologize for that. It's taken me a while to decide how I feel about the heartbreaking performances of the last few weeks, as well as the injuries that continue to plague the team. What I will say is this; at 3-5 I at best only expected to be 5-3 at this point (that's a two game swing) If we had beaten Chicago or actually showed up to play vs. Arizona, we would be looking at a 5-3 record atop the division.

This weeks game is Pivotal. Splitting the season series with the Cardinals who look to be at the top of the division is huge if it comes down to a tie record at the end of the year. We cannot afford to lose both games to AZ this year. Matt has historically performed well in AZ, and AZ has typically played poor at home. That said, the Seahawks continue to play horribly on the road and are 0-3 this season. Something has got to give. The defense is relatively healthy going into this game. Marcus Trufant (C) should play a big role against the high flying and dynamic wide receiving core Arizona will field.

Like I said going into week 6, the key to this game will be for our front 4 to get pressure on Kurt Warner, and working in intelligent and effective blitz packages. Mebane, Hawthorne, and Curry are my key players on defense this week.

On offense, we have no running game. No need to discuss it. Just like last week against the Lions where Matt went 39-51, 329yrds, this game will rest on the shoulders of our leader. Matt gets easily discouraged by dropped balls and key penalties, so I look for fundamentals and execution to be key on the offensive side of the ball.

I will not make a prediction for this game all I will say is GO HAWKS!!
